Hektor by Jürg Lehni

Test-7.jpg

I came across this project Hektor a couple of weeks ago and was amazed at the simplicity and elegance of the design engineering (ok, and mildly jealous..). This has the light visual weight that I am hoping my xy plotter has and the ability to scale to different sorts of spaces.

It also highlighted the core problem (aside from the tech...) with my project (and many art/tech projects I have seen): so what if I make a room-sized printer - what will it print? The form/content - or tech/content rather - questions. Tech for it's own sake is fascinating but not very moving as art, and something of a trap. It's not an issue unique to "tech art" - one can see the same thing with printmaking or any other medium which has involved processes and techniques.

Hopefully this plotter is going to go beyond being a science fair project...
